Instructions for installing backing & ceiling repairs
All ceiling repairs and backing installation require the following items.
Lumber or other suitable material: We recommend a piece of 1 X 3 lumber that is 4 inches longer than the hole being repaired. A 6 inch hole needs backing that is 10 inches in length. Dimensional lumber up to a 2 X 4 can be used. Anything larger than a 2 X 4 will put additional stress on a drywall ceiling. Metal studs, Hat channel or Z-furring can also be used.
Drywall Screws: A minimum of 5 standard drywall screws are needed. We recommend only using screws designed for drywall installation. These are available at most hardware stores.
Screw Gun: A variable speed cordless or corded drill with a Phillips screw head attachment is always recommended for working with drywall. DO NOT USE NAILS.
Follow all safety instructions and guidelines when working on a ladder or scaffolding.
Step 1: Once you've prepared and properly sized your hole make sure to wipe all dust from the raw drywall edge exposed when the damaged area was cut away.
Step 2: We've marked the backing we'll be using to give you an idea of the pattern for your drywall screws. Notice that they're staggered. This will insure that the wood your using will not split during the install.
Step 3: After placing the wood you're using as backing on the backside of the hole, use a drywall screw to hold it in place. It's very important to hold the backing steady while installing the drywall screws.
Step 4: Be sure to hold the backing in place while you're setting the second drywall screw. You should install the second screw on the other side of your hole. Remember to keep your drywall screws staggered.
Step 5: Once you've placed the first two screws you can let go of the backing and place the other screws in a staggered pattern. Make sure the screw heads are set just below the drywall surface paper.
Step 6: Load the patch or plug as shown in the installation instructions and place in the hole. Make sure to protect the floor to catch any joint compound that may fall. Protect your eyes from falling joint compound.
Step 7: After protecting the floors follow the installation instructions and set the patch. Remember that we use a flexible composite face material so you can wipe the patch hard as you need to with no damage.
Step 8: When the patch is set tightly in place install another drywall screw in the center of the patch making sure to connect with the backing. The drywall screw should be within 1 inch of the drywall patch center.
Step 9: Slowly drive this screw until it's just below the surface of the patch. Once set follow the installation instructions to finish your repair and ready it for paint. Protect your eyes from falling joint compound
