Instructions to install DWC Drywall Plugs
You will need the following items to install a DWC Drywall Repair Plug
All Purpose Joint Compound: We recommend mixing 1 tablespoon of water with two cups joint compound to achieve a stirred sour cream consistency. Most repairs can be completed with 2 cups.
A drywall saw or utility knife to cut the drywall: A drywall saw available at most hardware stores is best for cutting the drywall needing repair. A box cutter type knife will also give you satisfactory results provided extreme caution is used. Do not use a serrated kitchen knife.
A 6 or 8 inch drywall finishing knife: We advise beginners to use an 8 inch drywall knife for finishing drywall. This will produce good results for most do it yourself drywall repairs.
A plastic mud pan and a 100 to 220 grit sanding sponge: A drywall repair kit that contains all the tools you'll need is available at most big box home improvement stores.
Use a pencil with a tape measure or a template to mark the damaged area of the drywall to be removed for repair.
Use a drywall saw or utility knife to cut and remove the area marked for repair. Keep the blade on the outer part of the marked line.
Using a damp cloth wipe away as much dust as possible while getting the raw exposed drywall moist. This insures a superior bond.
After checking that the patch fits in the hole you've cut, load the plug as shown in the pictures on the right with joint compound.
Use a plastic sandwich bag to squeeze the joint compound out of a cut corner as if you were frosting a cake or applying caulk.
Using your drywall knife place joint compound on the outside of the plug using a quick jerking up and down motion.
Place the loaded drywall patch into hole then use the edge of your drywall knife to push the face material tight against the wall.
Keep pushing the drywall patch against the wall until joint compound is pushed out of all the holes in the face material as shown.
Wipe the entire patch area down from the center out. Wipe as hard as you can to set the face material tight & flush with the wall.
It's important to wipe the face material down as hard as possible. We use a flexible composite material for the face that's less than 1/30th of an inch thick.
Our face material can't be damaged by wiping too hard or by over-sanding.
When patch is set tight against the wall cover the entire area with a thin layer of joint compound using a sideways motion and let dry. Only apply thin and tight coats of joint compound to the repair.
After your first coat has dried apply a second coat. This time use an up and down stroking motion. This fills and levels things that were missed when the first coat was applied. Keep everything smooth and tight.
Congratulations, you should be able to apply texture at this point but you may have to touch up a bit if your walls are not textured. Remember to sand gently but if you need to sand harder you can with confidence. Our face material will take anything you can dish out with sandpaper.
It's always a good idea before you paint to double check your work. Do this by running your hand over the repaired area in a circular motion. Feel for bumps, edges, lines and any other possible problems. If it doesn't feel smooth enough to paint apply another thin coat of joint compound, let dry and then gently sand.
Follow all safety instructions and guidelines when working on a ladder or scaffolding.
